I. Preparation
Tool Selection
Drill Bit: Must use a dedicated diamond drill bit (core/hollow type or solid type) or tungsten carbide bit. Standard metal bits will shatter the glass.
Drill: Variable-speed drill recommended. Maintain 200-400 RPM (low speed is critical).
Accessories: Coolant water (spray bottle/pipette), marker pen, masking tape, safety gear (goggles, cut-resistant gloves).
Glass Handling
Tempered glass cannot be drilled (pre-stressed structure will explode). Only annealed/standard glass is suitable.
Securing & Protection:
Place glass on a soft surface (rubber/foam mat) and clamp edges to prevent sliding.
Apply masking tape over drilling marks on both sides to reduce chipping.
II. Drilling Procedure
Mark Position
Precisely mark the center point with a marker. Draw a guide circle slightly larger than the bit diameter.
Starting the Hole
Tilt the drill bit at 45° to the glass surface. Gently score a shallow groove to prevent skidding.
Once a dent forms, slowly straighten the drill to 90°.
Drilling
Cooling: Continuously apply water to the drilling point to dissipate heat and prevent cracking.
Parameters:
Maintain low speed (≤400 RPM).
Apply light, consistent pressure—let the bit’s weight do the work. Never force it.
Breakthrough: At ~80% depth, reduce pressure and speed to minimum to avoid exit-side chipping.
III. Critical Precautions
Safety First
Wear goggles (against glass fragments) and cut-resistant gloves at all times.
Work in a ventilated area; clear glass dust promptly.
Anti-Cracking Measures
Thickness Rule: Glass thickness must exceed 1/8 of the hole diameter (e.g., ≥1.25mm thick for a 10mm hole).
Bit Condition: Replace worn/damaged bits (chipped, cracked, or out-of-round).
Emergency Handling
Stop immediately if overheating or cracks appear. Never twist a stuck bit.
IV. Finishing
Edge Smoothing: Deburr with 220+ grit wet sandpaper.
Inspection: Clear debris; verify smooth hole edges without radial cracks.
Warning: Beginners must practice on scrap glass first! Tempered, laminated, or patterned glass requires factory pre-processing.
